Van Maintenance 101: How to Keep Your Campervan in Top Shape
The Ultimate Van Maintenance & Rental Prep Guide
Inside VanCowork’s Full Vehicle Checklist & Why It Matters
From oil changes to toilet chemicals, from engine checks to cozy bedding — a campervan isn’t just a vehicle. It’s your home, your road trip buddy, and sometimes your entire lifestyle.
At VanCowork Portugal, we take this seriously. Whether you're preparing your personal van for the season, or you're about to rent one of ours, we've developed a complete maintenance and rental-ready checklist — so nothing gets left behind, and you hit the road fully prepared.
This blog combines our internal seasonal checklists, mechanical best practices, and the exact rental prep system we use before every single handover.

Ready to keep your van in top shape? Let’s dive in.
Why Van Maintenance Should Be a Priority
Campervans face unique challenges:
- Extra weight
- Long distances
- Exposure to salt, dust, heat, and cold
- Multiple systems (water, gas, electricity)
- More moving parts than a standard car
Proper maintenance doesn’t just prevent problems — it ensures:
- Safety on the road
- Comfort during your trip
- Lower repair costs
- Longer van life
- Better resale value

What Our Rental Checklist Looks Like (And Why It’s So Thorough)
Each van gets a printed checklist like the one you saw above. It's filled out before and after every rental by our logistics team.
We inspect:
- Mechanical status
- Cleanliness
- Kitchen kit & linen
- Fridge & shower
- Safety gear
- Electrical systems
- Document pack
- Storage compartments
- Gas + water levels
- Extras (USB cables, plugs, camping gear)
Every line gets a tick. Nothing is left to chance.

Van Maintenance Between Seasons
Whether you rent out your van or travel often, end-of-season maintenance is critical. Here’s what we do at VanCowork:
After Season Ends
- Deep clean and empty water/gas systems
- Disconnect leisure battery if van is stored
- Treat wood with cedar oil
- Inspect seals for water damage or UV wear
- Apply rust protection on exposed areas
- Check mechanical systems before storing
Before New Season Starts
- Refill and sanitize tanks
- Test all power and gas systems
- Replace filters if needed
- Confirm tires, oil, coolant, and brakes
- Run a full-day interior test (fridge, lights, fans, etc.)
Bonus: Common Mistakes Vanlifers Make
- Ignoring minor leaks
- Letting batteries drain during storage
- Forgetting to sanitize water tanks
- Overloading van beyond legal weight
- Skipping inspection of seals and fans
- Using general car mechanics who don’t understand camper systems
